DUBLINERS WOMEN

Adapted by Katie O'Kelly from James Joyce's Dubliners

Adapted from James Joyce’s iconic collection of Dubliners short stories, Dubliners Women focuses on three of the lesser known female narratives in the book – ‘The Boarding House’, ‘Clay’ and ‘Eveline’. Immersing the audience in the hidden worlds of Joycean Dublin, the show shines a light on the women’s stories, bringing the characters to life in a highly performative and theatrical storytelling style. The script is a fatihful adaptation of Joyce’s text, finding the humour and quintessential Irish wit in the stories through performance. It moves from loud, physical storytelling to the quiet and intimate, drawing the audience in to the inner narratives of the central characters. The stories are presented in a strong physical storytelling style, taking influences from Le Coq, vaudeville and traditional Irish storytelling.
Dubliners Women celebrates traditional Irish culture through humour, music and literature, while also exploring the main themes in the text such as reproductive justice, institutionalisation and the complexity of human relationships. The thematic universality of the stories, teamed with their understanding of the particularities of Irish culture and humour, make this an ideal production for international touring and for a wider European audience.
